GYOZA – Japanese type fried dumpling

gyouzaChinese dumpling is world famous food. In Japan, there is a Japanese type dumpling.  It must be imported from China at some stage of the history, and the Chinese dumpling was arranged into Japanese style as many of the imported food in Japan.

Japanese style dumpling is a fried food, although Chinese original is steamed or boiled.  Also the shape is different from each other. Chinese is more rounded shape than Japanese one.  What’s more, taste is different too. Chinese dumpling has meat taste more than Japanese one, then, Japanese dumpling has mixed taste of meat, cabbage, ginger, and garlic.

It’s really interesting that sometimes I encounter Japanese type dumpling at Chinese restaurants especially in overseas countries. I don’t know the reason why, but those restaurants may be ordered FRIED DUMPLING ( or Japanese type one ) by Japanese tourists often enough to give up keeping Chinese style only.

Anyway, the Japanese like this Japanese type dumpling very much. It’s called GYOZA in Japan. GYOZA is in the menu at most of the Chinese restaurants in Japan, and many of Japanese Ramen restaurants also have Gyoza in menu often.

Interestingly, Gyoza specializing restaurants are very very popular recently because of the taste and of the cost.  If you go to one of the specializing restaurants, OSHO ( 王将) in Japan,  you can eat 1 plate of GYOZA at only 200 yen approximately. Also the taste is really good.  At recent recession time, people want to save more. So OSHO is really crowded with customers these days.

I’m not sure if foereigners would like GYOZA soon at a taste, but please try a few time, then I suppose you will understand it just like Sushi needs time to be understood by foreign people.
