If we look back the history of Japanese idols, who do we select as the biggest memory ? Some may choose Momoe Yamaguchi, and some may choose Seiko Matsuda, Akina Nakamori, Namie Amuro, or Candies. Yet, probably the biggest idol in the history was PINK LADY.
They suddenly came out on TV with a big hit record of PEPPER KEIBU ( or detective Pepper in English ). Since that, they had continued releasing mega hit records in Japan, and they also succeeded going to American music scene as the first achievement of Japanese idols with a hit record of ” Kiss in the dark”. This ranked in top 40 hit chart and some exposure on American TV or Radio realized.
At the time, Japanese domestic music is not simply a music industry, it’s always related with idols. Idols’ records became big hits rather than real musician’s records. Japanese music scene was still in naive time.
PINK LADY had a big time in the late 1970′s. They had soo many hit songs but the smashing time was not so long. It was really like a typhoon. PINK LADY’s dance was copied by kids to adult, their character goods were everywhere, and they produced many PINK LADY phenomena.
Maybe we have never experienced such big movement by an idol or idol group. At the time, there also was a pretty idol group called Candies. They were more pretty idol than a dancing and sexy PINK LADY type. Both were very popular, but when focusing on the time of late 1970′s, PINK LADY was far influential over Japan.
Now the members, Mie and Kei, are still working in Japanese TV business, but they don’t come up so frequently. Apparently they are not singers now, they are more like actress.
In the time of PINK LADY, Japan was in booming time of economy. We enjoyed anything positively. But still the elder people wanted conservative world. There, PINK LADY appeared and changed the image of the idol from pretty face to sexy image, of course they were pretty, but they added the new sense.
Next video is very interesting, PINK LADY vs CANDIES !!!!
