
Some might know that eel is a very popular food in Japan. Especially in the summer time annually, we have custom to eat eel on the regular day, Doyo-Ushinohi.
Eel cooking is really simple. We just grill it with sweet Teriyaki sauce as you see photo. And the cooked eel is put on the rice bowl or rice box, which is called Unaju ( rice box type ) or Unadon ( rice bowl type).
Eel might look ugly as a food and it seems not to cause your appetite, however, please try if you are brave enough ! we love it, eel meat is really soft and juicy.
When trying, we recommend you chose a trustful or popular restaurant. Cooking way is simple but if someone unfamiliar to eel cooking tries to cook, the taste often would become terrible ! Cooking way is simple, but it requires a professional technique. That’s why real eel chef in Japan is respected and traditional restaurants are more popular even if they are a little expensive.
There are some traditional eel restaurants in Tokyo, Osaka, or each cities respectively. Among Tokyo eel restaurants, NODAIWAis probably most famous and trusted by repeating eaters. Nodaiwa is run by a chef in the 5th generation from his family founder. Estimated cost for a person is around 3000 yen if you simply eat Unaju only without drinks or something.
Some say there are more delicious eel restaurants than Nodaiwa in Tokyo. Still, Nodaiwa is good enough to know the real taste of traditional eel dish of Japan.
