Spirited away needs us to understand some traditional Japanese superstition or myth. As the story goes by, it’s becoming harder for us to understand the total background of the story. Maybe Mr. Miyazaki doesn’t want us to understand it all because it’s a utterly different cultures even in Japan between now and then, or today and ancient time.
What we can do is let us flow in the stream of the story and FEEL. Maybe you will understand what I want to say if you see it.
Total story is not hard to understand because the beginning and ending is simple. Story begins with a magic and it ends with a feeling of nostalgia. Story is a kind of UFO encounter and characters try to run away from UFO world. Not a hard story. But some of the details are really spiritual and described as world of imagination. Animation is naturally like that, but Mr. Miyazaki’s world is certainly based on intelligent understanding. Not a usual animation world but a creative message movie, I should say.
But again, we don’t need to know them all, we can use our imagination and let it pass. Story tells us something when it’s done and some of the hard parts will be clear when we know the ending. Probably hard parts are also used to make it dramatic animation and to make us feel like a dream world together with his story making.
Spirited away is OK for anybody, but some say it’s hard to understand like above.
I think we don’t have to know all, we can feel many things from this movie. I also think that’s OK for now. Later when we see it again, I’m sure a different understanding will appear in our mind as we grow old. That’s what this movie has forever.

Spirited Away is a joyful and a little sad movie. I don’t know why we cry when we hear the song of Spirited Away. Something inside us makes us recall the days of our childhood.
Hayao Miyazaki is arguably a genius. So is Joe Hisaishi.
Spirited Away also is a perfect combination of two genius’ works.
